Headingley Thriller: Kusal Mendis Smashes 121 as Sri Lanka Edge England by 16 Runs to Level Series

Sri Lanka found their fighting spirit in West Yorkshire, responding to their heavy defeat at Chester-le-Street by leveling the bilateral series in front of a packed Headingley crowd on Thursday. Powered by a commanding century from captain Kusal Mendis, the tourists posted 321 for 6 after choosing to bat first. England seemed on track after an electric century opening stand, but left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage and disciplined death bowling strangled the chase, holding the hosts to 305 for 9 to seal a tense 16-run victory.
DailyCricInfo brings you the complete match report, tactical turning points, and key statistics from the second ODI in Leeds.
Kusal Mendis Sets Up 321 with Masterful Century
Winning the toss under clear skies, Sri Lanka backed their batting unit on a flat, true surface.
While Gus Atkinson (2 for 55) struck in the tenth over to remove Pathum Nissanka for 25, the breakthrough only brought Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis together for a decisive second-wicket stand. The pair added 137 runs, keeping England's seamers at bay through busy strike rotation and calculated boundary hitting.
Kamindu reached his half-century before falling to leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed (2 for 48) for 54 off 65 deliveries.
Kusal Mendis continued his relentless rhythm, reaching his hundred in 85 balls. By the time Jofra Archer (1 for 68) ended his stay in the 36th over, Mendis had plundered 121 off 100 balls, hitting 14 fours and three sixes.
Pavan Rathnayake added late impetus with 48 off 39 deliveries, while Janith Liyanage (32 off 26) and Dunith Wellalage (16 not out) provided the closing fireworks to push Sri Lanka to an imposing 321 for 6.
Openers Ignite England Chase Before Wellalage Triggers Stumble
Chasing 322, England made a flying start that initially silenced Sri Lanka's defense.
Tom Banton and Ben Duckett dismantled the new ball, putting on 143 runs for the opening wicket in under 20 overs. Duckett struck nine boundaries in his 67 off 63 deliveries, while Banton continued his rich run of form, hitting seven fours and three sixes in a 62-ball 73.
The game turned sharply in the space of four overs.
Dilshan Madushanka broke the stand by removing Duckett, before Dunith Wellalage took over. Wellalage had Banton caught at midwicket, followed quickly by the scalp of England captain Harry Brook for just 1. When Eshan Malinga trapped Joe Root leg-before for 15, England slipped from 143 for 0 to 203 for 4, shifting momentum firmly back to the visitors.
Buttler and Jacks Fight Back, But Sri Lanka Pacres Seal the Win
Former captain Jos Buttler launched a blistering counter-offensive to put England back in touching distance. Battling cramps, Buttler hammered five boundaries and five sixes, racing to 69 off just 49 balls.
Alongside Will Jacks, who compiled a measured 52 off 61 balls, Buttler kept the required rate manageable heading into the final ten overs.
However, Sri Lanka held their nerve at the death. Wellalage finished an outstanding spell of 3 for 49 in ten overs, before Madushanka and Asitha Fernando nailed their yorkers.
The pressure told in the 49th over when Eshan Malinga removed Jacks for 52. On the first ball of the final over, Madushanka had Buttler caught in the deep, extinguishing England's last hopes. The home side ended on 305 for 9 in their 50 overs, falling 16 runs short.
Kusal Mendis was named Player of the Match for his match-winning 121.
With the series tied at 1-1, both teams now head south to London for the decider at The Oval on Sunday, September 27.
